The Backyard Kids planted tomatoes, squash and pole beans in discarded tires behind the church--in the "backyard"! The tire garden technique is used by PCUSA mission worker, Mark Hare, with subsistence farmers in Haiti who are trying to feed their families by planting small crops around their homes in the central plains. The children watched a video of Mark Hare describing how he learned this technique from a small farmer in Nicaragua and is now sharing the idea in Haiti. The children also located Haiti on a map of the world and learned that it is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, wracked by hurricanes as well as the devastating 2010 earthquake. Produce from the garden will be donated locally to the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) to help families in Arlington who can't afford fresh vegetables.
